Why Elderberries Are Your Secret Weapon for Immune Health

If you have ever stood in the health food aisle wondering what all the purple bottles are about, this one is for you. Elderberries are the reason Mama Nayture exists at all, and they are worth understanding properly before you spend money on anything.

What makes elderberries special

Elderberries come from the elder tree, Sambucus nigra. Small, deep purple, gently tart, and picked through the colder months across Europe for centuries.

They are naturally rich in antioxidants, vitamin C and a group of compounds called anthocyanins. The anthocyanins are what give the berry its colour, and antioxidants generally help protect cells from free radical damage. That is a big part of why families have reached for elderberries in winter for as long as anyone has been keeping records.

We use them for everyday immunity support. Not as a medicine, and not as a replacement for anything your doctor gives you. As food, taken consistently, the way people have always used them.

Why we pair them with raw honey

Raw honey does two jobs in our syrup. It sweetens it, which is the only reason most kids will take anything twice, and it is a prebiotic food that helps nourish gut health.

Just as importantly, it is what we use instead of refined sugar. There is no added sugar in Drink Purple. If you want the longer version of why that decision mattered to us, we wrote it up on our raw honey page.

One firm note. Raw honey means Drink Purple is not suitable for babies under 12 months. That is not a suggestion, and we would rather lose the sale than bury it.

What else is in the bottle

Elderberries and raw honey do the heavy lifting, but they are not alone. There is ginger for warmth, rosehips for natural vitamin C, echinacea root, cinnamon, clove and lemon peel.

Nine ingredients in total, short enough to read standing in the aisle. Every one of them is broken down on our ingredients page, including the one that does not sound like food.

How to actually use it

  • Straight from the spoon. Fifteen seconds on the way past the fridge. This is how most families do it.
  • Stirred into warm water with lemon. Nice on a cold morning, and good for anyone who does not love a spoon.
  • Through a smoothie. There is a recipe here if you want one that kids actually finish.
  • Drizzled over yoghurt or porridge. Breakfast does the remembering for you.

Consistency is where the value sits. One small thing at the same moment every day beats a big effort in July.

Who it is for

Children from 12 months, and adults too, which is the part most families do not expect. One bottle covers the whole house. Supporting big and little immune systems alike.

Dosage changes with age, so have a look at our guide to how much for each age before you start. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your healthcare provider first.

Where to start

A syrup is one part of a much bigger picture, and we would rather say that than pretend a spoonful fixes a winter. Sleep, food and time outside still do most of the work. We went through all of it honestly in our guide to natural immune support for kids.

If you are ready for the bottle itself, the 350ml lives in the fridge and the 60ml Mini lives in the bag. Everything for the kids sits together in our kids immunity collection.

A daily purple sip, before the first sick day.
